I don't know whether to reach for the sick bucket or laugh like a
drain.
I thought from what Phil was saying that there wasn't a piano in
the Bull, but if there wasn't - where were they playing it? Its
hardly the weather to open the windows at Glebe so it could be
heard from the Bull.
I quite enjoyed it but, like you, wondered where the piano was,
maybe they went off to Glebe Cottage for a sing song.
There used to be a piano at The Bull. Eddy was sick in it and was
barred by Sid.
Although I'm a mere 38, I found the sing-along rather nostalgic. I
remember singing songs round the piano with my family while my
grandfather played (this would have been in the late 1970s). We used
to sing, among others, The Village Pump, Widecombe Fair, The Road to
the Isles, The Skye Boat Song, and Summertime on Breedon. Grandpa was
born in 1898, and visiting him was like stepping back in time. They
did have electric lights, but we would also use oil lamps (of which
Grandpa had a large collection), and there would be an open fire and
home made tea wine. (I wasn't old enough to drink this, but my Dad
tells me it was pretty horrible!)
I do think there's something special about making your own music.

Does that mean that "The Village Pump" is a real song?
I had always assumed that it was a song known only in Ambridge.
