And, for the record, I wish the Austrians hadn't banged him up. Even though the thought of DI rotting in jail is a very pleasing one, it really isn't the way to deal with him and his like. He was ruined, humiliated and utterly ignored after his libel debacle, and we should just have left him like that.

<wave, languid>

All this is doing is allowing him to enjoy the limelight again, giving the neo-Fascists a martyr to rally round, and giving his ideas the oxygen of publicity again.

I rather flippantly (1) remarked to my brother (who lives and works in Austria) last night that the main thing David Irving had done wrong was to not be Austrian; had he been so, he would surely have been elected or something by now. While it turns out I was a *little* wide of the mark in some respects, it was by no means all respects. He is, it seems, loathed by *everyone*, not just the sensible people. The Neo-Fascists despise him because, unlike those who can genuinely claim a long proud family tradition of National Socialism, DI is just a fat arriviste, and an English one at that.

Civilisation can't defeat uncivilised ideas by trying to repress them. They have to be defeated by showing them to be vile and untenable.

1). OK, *very* flippantly; Strong Drink had been taken.
