Switzerland doesn't believe it's had a case on its land, but brought
its poultry in (all of it, including the free-range organic!) well
before Christmas.
I've just read that migrating birds are not such a problem as they are
elsewhere, as they make wide detours around the mountains (and any
coming via Italy have probably already been shot and eaten)
So, does that mean you can't buy Free Range Eggs over there now? Or if
you've got few enough hens and big enough buildings can you still call
them that?
Strictly speaking there won't be any free range eggs as soon as it
starts snowing, anyway, as the hens aren't able to get out. The eggs
are still sold as free range throughout the year, though. They're
still better off than the barn hens, which is the main thing IMO.
How do hens in a state of nature react to cold weather? Do they prefer
to curl up with a good book? Do the farmers have to shoo them out at
playtime to keep their free range status?
