OT - GoogleEarth, techie advice sought

GoogleEarth was highly recommended to me, so I decided to download it
yesterday. When it tried to install itself, the computer crashed and
rebooted, complaining that it was recovering from a "serious error". I had
one more go at the installation and it happened again, so I've now
uninstalled the whole thing. The computer briefly sulked and pretended not
to recognise my password but eventually relented and is now apparently back
to normal.
Is that fault likely to be with my computer (about 3 yrs old, Win XP,
broadband), Google Earth itself, me, or some mysterious chemistry between
any combination of these? Or something less obvious (Bill Gates, George
Bush, global warming, cold weather, Tony Blair, bird flu, the media...)?
Any advice on whether I should attempt to download it again or just forget
the whole thing?

Best wishes,
Marjorie
