In the meantime, I've tried out Kerio as a free firewall, but I was so used to ZA it seemed enormously complicated to me. YMMV. It seems to work well in conjunction with AVG. Oh, with AVG you have to fiddle with your outgoing Mailwasher accounts to make sure it works properly.

My Norton Antivirus 2003 is about to expire but they no longer provide
support for this. The obvious thing to do seems to be to take out a new
subscription for the 2006 version, but a customer review on Amazon says it
won't work when his broadband is on, and that this is a common problem.
Any ideas out there on whether he's right, and if so, whether there's a
worthwhile alternative? NAV 2006 will cost me about £30. I'd give it a try
but I've heard Symantec are not helpful with after-sales problems.
I've had two subscriptions to NAV on separate machines. When the first expired, I had all kinds of difficulties in renewing it online and getting the right code to work. In the end I gave up. With the second version, it caused all kinds of little niggles, but I persevered for the period of the subscription. Uninstalling NAV can also be a painful process.
I use AVG, which has caught more potential problems than NAV. I also use Zone Alarm as a firewall. Both of these are free and have a good reputation. Combined with Mailwasher, they should be sufficient for pretty much anything. I have had two viruses in the last 18 months, neither of which has got past these precautions to affect my PC.
Personally, I wouldn't touch NAV with any PC where the choice is mine. Go for the free stuff and use the money for something useful.
There seems to be quite a consensus in favour of AVG. I'll give it a try - thanks to all who suggested it.
I use Mailwasher too and am very happy with that. Zone Alarm, however, caused me huge problems that persisted even after I'd uninstalled it, and I will not be trying it again. Maybe I need to find an alternative firewall to supplement the Win XP SP2 one.
