It goes back to well before the non-show at the wedding. He was none
too pleased when Ed stole his car and crashed it. And he wasn't
particularly impressed, either, when Ed visited Will at the Dower
House and took the opportunity to relieve Caroline's purse of UKP 50
that wasn't being put to best use.
It seems to me that their relationship is probably coloured by three
factors:
a) Sibling rivalry, exacerbated by the fact that Eddie has always
seemed to favour Ed over Will.
b) Ed has consistently behaved like a pratt, and Will has often been
on the receiving end (e.g. when his car was stolen and wrecked and
when Ed let him down by backing out of the Best Man role at short
notice).
c) (possibly) subconscious recognition that Emma loves Ed. He'd
never admit this, even to himself, but it could have been working away
in his subconscious.
