Have people heard about Librivox? http://librivox.blogsome.com
It's a volunteer project to make recordings of public domain texts and put them into the public domain.
Brilliant idea, Niles. There's something called 'Bookshare' in the US, but its not legal in the UK for us to subscribe: and back in June listeners to 'In Touch' were told there would be something coming along in the UK. Tonight I gather from what Peter said, we'll hear something by the end of October.

But like whoever it was ? Julian, the reading will have to be of a high standard. I've used one or two books read by volunteers, and although they were great reading english words, give them words from obscure Pacific islands (it was Island of the Colorblind for those who know the book), and they fell down badly.
You need to be a very good reader to do it justice. If you want to hear what 'average' reading does for a listener, borrow a cassette from your local Talking News and you'll soon see how much you can take of it. Reading books is a much more skilled job than short newspaper articles (and they can be mangled, believe you me: I've done it myself - and no way would I read a book out loud)It'd be good to have an UMRA takeover of this one, as well as Geograph :)
