Well, as I understand it, PVR is a subset of DVR.

A PVR (personal video recorder) records digitally (typically onto a
hard drive), and is therefore a DVR (digital video recorder). However,
there are other forms of DVR - for example, those which record video
onto disc (DVD-R etc) or tape (digital video cassette).

I would say thats about right - but add that a PVR in reality allows
scheduled programming to be recorded.

Thats not what he said!

A digital video recorder is something that will record onto a variety
of media. HDD, DVDR, tape. ie it records digital video. A VPR IS a
digital video recorder. The only real difference being the fact you
can make "personal schedules" of TV shows.

You can have a PVR that is DVDR as well!

Thats my understanding of it anyway.

the naming makes no sense or suggestion of this.
if anything it should be the other way round, personal video recorder
implies this would be to dvd-r etc since this it is portable(personal).
what about a player which records to both - a pdvr :/
