I'm getting increasingly irritated by the unskippable "Anti-piracy"
message preaching at me every time I play a legally purchased DVD.

Are there any players that can be hacked to remove the "feature" that
allows this?

Yes. I have a Pioneer DV-575A which has been hacked with third-party
software to skip the PUO's.

Something where the DVD tray goes all the way out would be a bonus,
but I can live with it. Yes, I am easily annoyed by little
irritations:)

The easiest answer is to only play pirated discs. ;-)

True. I can get them from usenet much more cheapely and more quickly
as well, but I consider that a little unethical.

I'll probably end up copying them and removing the restriction, but
that's tedious and time consuming and I don't know if Double layer DVD
+Rs will work on my rather dusty Aiwa 370.

You can easily shrink them but the results are variable. Copy protection is
also a ***, you have to update the ripping program almost every few
days.
