Panasonic HDD/DVD recorder: unreadable display

My otherwise excellent HDD/DVD recorder (DMR-EH50) has a front-panel
display that should show when the "Ext Link" feature is enabled (which
works a treat with Panasonic digibox to give very easy programming).
It was never particularly easy to read this part of the display, but
now, after a couple of years, the LED (this bit should be in red) has
become so faint that it is now unreadable without a darkened room and
a magnifying glass - which makes it incredibly hard to know which mode
it is in.
Has anybody else had this experience on this or a similar model?
Has anyone managed to get Panasonic to do anything about it after
expiry of warranty period (on the grounds that it should be of
"Merchantable Quality" and to last "a reasonable period of time)?
