I had exactly the same thing. I created a DVD of mixed music videos for some people. In preview mode on Nero I could hear the background music on my main menu but when I played the resulting disc in both my standalone players neither played the music.

Strangely about half the people I did send the disc to could hear the background track so it could be your actual player that's fussy. Having said that, one of my players was a cheap Chinese DIVX player which normally plays absolutely anything.
