With respect, this makes it sound a lot more complicated than it needs
to be.
My wireless router is connected to the Internet. It transmits that
connection (securely) to any wi-fi enabled PC in range. A £60
modem/router/wifi dongle bundle from any respectable make - Netgear,
D-Link, Linksys - will do everything the OP needs, with no need for
talk of access points, hubs or switches.
The OP has a BT Interntet address so it's a safe bet he's using ADSL.

I just sorted out a similar setup for my brother. He had adsl via a
BT modem attached to his phone line, which was then attached to his PC
via USB.
We went to the PC World website and found a cheap Dlink bundle of a
wireless router with a built in adsl modem and a USB wi-fi dongle. We
used 'collect at store' thus getting about 25% off PC World's usual
daft prices, and picked up the unit an hour later at his local PCW
store. It's a very handy system for those who want ok online prices
and same-day collection, and gives you a wonderfully odd feeling of
getting value for money at PC World.
He replaced the BT modem with the router, which has a modem built in.
A bit of setting up - telling the router the account details and
sorting some basic security - and hey presto, one wireless network
that everyone in the house can share. His main PC had wi-fi built in,
so we installed the dongle to an old laptop. When the kids are playing
online, he can still access his email.
