I've got a D-link DSL - G640T modem/ router. It cost £64 last week from simply computers. It came with a free dongle, so my daughter can share the internet on her laptop, with my computer! Great Value! I've got rid of my old Alcatel Frog modem, and replaced it with this, there's no faffing around entering user name and password, as the modem/router remembers the initial settings. And the connection is "always on" The reason I got this, was to stop all the arguments as to " it's my go now, she's already had an hour on the net!"On Wed, 3 Aug 2005 21:53:35 +0000 (UTC), "parahandy" <allandotmcphail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:
Apologies for the OT, but I know I'll get a decent answer.
A) what's the difference between a Wireless Modem and a Wireless Router. Don't they just do the same thing?
No. A wireless router has no connection to the internet apart from via any shared PC. It is no differnent to a switch or Hub - which also cannot connect direct to the internet.
B) I have a (old-ish) laptop, and PC. To share the broadband connection, do I just need a Wireless router (see above), adaptor for the PC (currently connected to ADSL modem via Ethernet), and a PC card for the laptop?
How do you currently connect?
If you have a USB ADSL modem that plugs into your PC and want to send the signal without cables to your laptop, you will need an Access Point for the PC and Laptop and a wireless router to distribute.
