Peter, you wrote that religion "is an artificial crutch".

Actually, it was Dave who said that. I merely quoted him (in
agreement).

Some other clever *** wrote
"Religion is the masterpiece of the art of animal training,
for it trains people as to how they shall think."

I personally think both comments have validity.

I do not agree with the second. On the contrary, religion trains
people in how *not* to think. They are expected to believe what
they're told (often by a cross-dressing paedophile!) without question
or the benefit of any supporting evidence. They call this 'faith', and
seem to regard it as an admirable quality. In reality, it's the exact
opposite.

Any worthwhile training in how to think will emphasise the value of
questioning, of looking at evidence and testing theories. Hmmm....
haven't I just described the scientific method? There's no reason at
all why this method should not be applied to religion, and every
reason why it should. And the results of doing so are quite
illuminating.

Formal religion has a lot to answer for.

It certainly does!
