Re: Nene Valley Railway

I am not a big fan of either carelessness in safety matters nor an
over-scrupulous adherence to overbureaucratic legislation.

I'm just a "mug punter" who likes the sterling work done by preservation
societies and (I hope) takes a reasonable view of such things.

Can I ask whether these matters WERE formally raised (in writing) with the
NVR's management before the file was sent to the railway inspectorate?

Interesting point! I am advised by my contact and have verified the matter with others employed upon the railway of the following.

That all of the clearly documented relevant procedures were indeed scrupulously followed to the letter in a number of cases where safety was an issue and the correct action taken at the time regarding witness statements etc. When no action was taken in a number of cases concerning safety matters after the clearly laid down procedures had been exhausted a number of telephone conversations and written communications were made to follow up the statutory written evidence in each case. However as the only feedback received was a torrent of abuse from members of the senior management, which was levelled against those who reported these matters, it obviously placed the staff concerned in the invidious position of having to take matters further in the interests of PUBLIC SAFETY. This [I assume] was only done after a great deal of soul searching by those involved.

Why Mr White chose to make the matter public in such a tantalising way is of course open to conjecture. I am personally of the opinion that it was not done out of any sense of personal malice, rather that he was wishing to air the quite serious problem of railway safety at Nene Valley Railway without any thought of possible repercussions. I hope for his sake that proves to be the case.
