South east London isn't nearly so bad as people make out, and Kent (ie. just outside Greater London, Bromley borough etc) is lovely and quite affordable rent-wise, with good commuting connections, depending of course on where your job is. If it's in west London, then the same can pretty much be said for the south west.
I agree, Im out at Epsom paying 750 pmonth for a one bedroom flat.
We are looking at new jobs in baker street and have been suprised we
can move out the other side of london, have a bigger place for less
money...

Mind you, having said that about rent, we were paying £1600 pcm for a 4br end of terrace mews house in Chislehurst...not always affordable, but we got it off the 'net before we moved from Oz, with the notion that if we hated living in England then at least we'd have a nice house to live in. As we loved it, paying that much rent then prepared us for paying our mortgage when we bought in September, in that what we pay on that now is cheap by comparison! Needless to say as well, we didn't buy in Chislehurst as the house prices are definitely inflated for what you get...but again, there's lots cheaper rent than what we paid - eg. friends also in Chislehurst pay £900 pcm for a 3br mid-terrace, with a similar size yard to what we had (ie. not much at all).

And of course, John in Surrey, you're the one I was referring to as "the Kiwi" in the thread!
