What you describe is called an 'O' Ring
There are many types available but the one I think you're after is an
'Omniseal'
A standard 'O' ring is just a plain ring, we use them on sub-aqua equipment,
but no collar with a spring, seen something like what you desc. in a garden
hose connection, that has a rubber ring, with a spring
