I just rang Trading Standards looking for info on a local company and
basically got naff all assistance. I asked them if TS recognised or had
even heard of the organisation this firm is a member of, the UK
Consumer Protection Agency. Apparently the phone number on the TS
website isnt actually TS at all, but someone who screens calls for
them. And no, they "didnt keep that sort of information".
"Hmmm, okay then, do you have any information on the building company
themselves, Rawlings Construction?" "No, we dont have that type of
information either, and if we did we couldnt reveal it to you due to
the DPA". Okay.... last resort then "What information of any type do
you have for me as a consumer?". "We can advise you of your rights".
Presumably thats after something has gone wrong - why would you need
advising of your rights otherwise? "But whenever I see rogue trader
style programs on the tv they always have a bloke from the local
trading standards going on about how they have several dozen complaints
about XYZ in a big folder - why cant you tell me about that?" "DPA".
"Great. You sound absof$%$£lutely useless to me as a consumer then."
What is the freakin point of TS keeping a file on company issues if
they cant tell you about them when you call BEFORE you hire them? I
want to know if this company are suitable to give 50 grand of my hard
earned wonga for an extension!

If you want to find out about good reliable companies you would do well to
contact recognised trademens institutions Such as The League of Master
Craftsmen, or one of the building trades associations. They would gladly
give you a list of relevent firms in your area.
