Facebook?

I was talking to a friend of mine recently and she mentioned that she was on
Facebook. I asked her how it worked and she said you "buy and sell"
friends. I said that sounds a bit odd to me. I checked out Facebook.com
and people have put all sorts of personal stuff on there. Either they are
mad or I am, I just can't see the point of baring my soul to the world.
What is Facebook for?
