My washing machine's knacked. Anyone know a good plumber in the
Ashford area?
What are the symptoms? 9 cases out of 10 you can do the job yourself.
It don't spin.
Does all the washing noises until the spin cycle, but don't do that.
Mate of mine reckons the programming thingie has packed up.
Could be and, if it is, a home fix isn't easy unless you feel confident.
BUT before your try that, I'd check it is emptying correctly- if not it
won't spin. More exactly, check it "thinks" it is emptying correctly.
There is a sensor that detects if the wash water has been pumped out
which sometimes gets gunged up and, even if the water has been pumped
out, the machine "thinks" it hasn't. Often if you leave a machine so
affected, it will spin after a delay (the sensor works on air pressure
and a partial block will let the air to leak away).
Turn off the machine and unplug it. Turn off the water supplies to the
machine. Lay the waste pipe along the floor to get out as much water as
you can. Then turn the machine on its side (watch for the water coming
out!).
The waste pipe is connected to a small pump. Working back from there
toward the drum you'll have one or more pipes. Disconnect them and clean
out. Basically, remove and clear any pipe you see in this area that is
connected to the waste. Expect to find a grey chalky paste, plus hair and
other gunge. Clean it all out. Somewhere from these pipes there will be a
thin pipe (3/8 dia) that heads toward the top of the machine. The lower
end is T'd off the pipes that feed the pump, the top end has a pressure
sensor. These USUALLY are about 2.5" in diameter, have a pipe (maybe 2)
and a couple of wires. They tend to be above the middle of the machine.
Make sure the pipe is clear of gunge, also the point where it T's off the
waste pipes.
Also clear the waste pipe that goes from the machine to the drain.
Reconnect all pipes, return machine to upright, and test. If it works,
buy me a pint ;-)
Sounds a bit tricky, but I'll have a go :o)
Sometimes when it won't spin it is because of a pressure build up inthe
pump, removing the filter on the front of the machine, and replacing can
sometimes cure the problem, worth a try anyway.
