Does anyone know the secret?
People in London can get to Soton for a reasonable amount of time and return
with advance-bought cheap tickets. Whichever way I look at megatrain etc
there just does not seem to be , unlike cheap National coach tickets, early
(before rush hour) weekday departures to Waterloo from Southampton and late
return (after rush hour). An hour or so in London before return seems all I
can ever find.
With a cheap day return ticket, the earliest you can leave
Southampton
is 08:57 (£27.20) and it doesn't matter what time you leave London
(even
during evening "rush hour" ) - so long as you leave the same day.
It costs about a fiver more for a one day railcard, which allows you
to
go anywhere you like on the tube all day.

I don't know about making savings by booking in advance.
