Hi Jim

I should have loooed on the Internet first before asking if you knew
what it was mean't to symbolise:

"Gilly Rogers - ?Sea Dreamer?s Rest?
Marina island, Royal Quays
Installed December 1998

In 1997, Sunderland-based artist Gilly Rogers was commissioned to
create a permanent work of art which would reflect the regeneration of
the local landscape and the changing nature of the local community at
Royal Quays, North Shields.
At the time the marina was little more than a building site, and new
housing and an influx of people to the area created a strong sense of
optimism in the changing tides of history.
It was during these times that Gilly became involved both with new
members of the community and with those who have weathered the changes
from industrial shipping through to the creation of the new leisure
marina. The sense of history and the excitement of these momentous
changes anchored themselves perfectly in that which has been an
integral part of the old and a central feature of the new - the marina
island itself.
At each end of the island stands an original capstan, the legacy of a
century of endeavour. It is these two metal studs that form the pivot
between the past and the future, between toil and leisure, between
memory and expectation.
"Sea Dreamer's Rest" is a work which reflects the romance of returning
seamen as they reach for home or dream of open water, as much as it
reflects the sleek buildings and high-tech look of this exciting new
development and the people who inhabit it. Yet this is a small,
intimate intervention which waits to be discovered by the viewer.
Within the capstan holes, where timbers used to wind in ships to their
final resting places, are set eight resin blocks.
At the seaward end of the island, white feathers have been captured in
the resin blocks to symbolise the floating dreams of the people who
may pass through, their aspirations for the present and the creation
of a confident future.
At the marina end of the island, the history has been captured by
suspension of clay pipes in the resin blocks to reflect the passage of
time, encapsulation of the dreams, and the quiet contemplation of all
who have gone before.
Even then the work is reflective in different ways. During the day
this work becomes a part of the background of daily life and activity,
a part of the whole. Yet, at night, the fibre optic lighting system
embedded within the capstans sends subtle beams of blues and greens
through the resin blocks and out across the darkened waters of the
Tyne, reminiscent of the lights to guide sailors to safety, to home
and to rest.
By the water's edge, on the very ends of the harbour island, people
often stand to contemplate and dream, taking time from hectic lives to
enjoy a moment's"
