You CAN do it yourself, Jim S. Software like
RecoverMyFiles
Active File recovery (I have used)
O & O Disk Recovery and others.
It DOES take a while but you can go for a pint while it runs:-) e-mail
me & I'll sort you out with it.

a) it's not my computer, which is a pc
b) I'm not sure it is still in a computer or just a hard drive with
connections.
Now tell me if it is easy?

Hi

This is, presumably, the same hard drive I looked at a few weeks ago. It is
only the hard disk, no computer which was an Apple Mac. When who ever
removed the hard disk from the Mac actually removed it they levered it out
with a screw drived rather than simply lifting the catch and gently removing
the drive.

As a result the lid which protects the disks inside and prevents dust and
air getting in has been damaged and is gaping open at one side.

I did get my Mac to recognise the disk did was unable to get it to read any
data from it presumably becaus ehte disks were damaged. The only options
given by the Mac was to initialise the disk.

In my opinion the only option was to take the disk to a company who could
dismantle the disks and read them in a clean room.

This really makes the case for making sure that you have a back up of all
important data, which was not available in this case.

I hope that this makes the scenario here a bit clearer.

Many thanks

Yep my original post was yonks ago and I had forgotten all about it. I
checked with my mate who is computer illiterate and thinks the world is held
together with string. (Don't knock it, he pays me to do his emails)
I checked whether he had solved the problem to find that he has another mate
in London who has an old applemac and he's going to try it in there. I
didn't have the heart to tell him, so I'll let him find out for himself.
In my defence I have never seen the drive in question so you know more about
it than I do.
I'm too nice for my own good :o)
