Nor did I accuse you of that,

Nor did I take it that way :-)

(although I must admit I was kind of
hinting that it must in some way appeal to the "hobbyist" in you).

Oh, that is most certainly part of it too.

If
you were *just* saving money you'd run something like Redhat or
Debian.

There's six PCs
in total in the house. That's a lot of cash for legit versions of Windows
on each PC although I do know it's possible to buy a legit "OEM" version
so long as it's bought with "qualifying hardware" which can be something
as cheap and simple as a mouse :-)

There are two machines in our house running Windows. Both came with
OEM licences, although one has also had an upgrade.

The last time I bought a fully operating PC was an Amiga 1200. Thinking
back, I've never actually bought a complete PC. Even going back to my
first '286 PC they've all been home built. Admittedly it's nearly as
cheap to buy ready built as DIY these days but I never have the need for a
completely new system. There's always room to upgrade :-)

I agree with you
completely about not wanting to spend more than that for licences.
Basically - my wife and I have a Windows machine apiece for general
use, and anything else runs Linux. At the moment that amounts to one
machine, (not counting the work laptop and the museum-piece Mac Plus)
but the principle remains. I don't mind paying Microsoft up to a
certain point. Their software is of good quality and generally value
for money. OTOH - I ain't made of money.

Yes, XP is a decent piece of software but I like to "tinker".
