(arhh, at last, something he knows something about - I hear some
coward shout from the back.

You may have noticed in the media a certain amount of disquiet about
things on TV not always being what they seem. Perhaps because
immediately I left school I went to work in the Advertising business,
I was used to fakery and illusion from the outset.Back in the fifties,
for example, photographic studio lights were so hot that we could not
photograph ice cream without it running away, so we had to substitute
mashed potato in stead - but surely by now everybody knows this and as
far as I know, haven't complained.

The very nature of radio, TV, cinema and theatre is illusion in the
name of entertainment. Do you demand your licence fee back because
David Copperfield did not really walk through the Great Wall of China
or make that 707 disappear? Do you seriously think that Andrew Lloyd
Whatnot is going to risk millions of pounds of investment on the whim
of the voting public without doing everything he can to ensure the
best person wins? (Lee Mead was the cast winner of Joseph from the
first moment of the first programme - and probably long before).

Oh so I'm cynical, am I? No, mate. I just know reality from illusion.
