Not sure that when SB started it was because of how cheap it would be, it really was a marginal class at that time, and something like a production 250 racer didn't cost all that much in the late '70s or early '80s. ... And SB wasn't SS, those old '80s SBs were massively modified, the old adage being that a SB was a production bike only as far as the cases and frame went - and the frame was usually heavily gusseted for additional strength. ...
