Draughts cost tens of pounds a month in direct heating costs.I'm quite happy with draughts, but I don't like damp. I grew up in a Victorian flat with 11 foot ceilings and rattly windows - it was never particularly warm (except in summer when the big south-facing windows let in lots of sunshine) but it was really dry. This place is a mould factory. I've given up getting upset about having to throw out leather shoes that have disintegrated. It happens. You move on.My mind boggles at the thought your houses are so poorly insulated andOh I donno, rich to me would mean this place gutted back to the stoneYes, that's just what our house needs too. I'd be happy with something
walls then refurbished with under floor heating throughout, fed from
a ground source heat pump, walls and roof fully insulated, all
windows double glazed, wood burners with boilers in the living rooms
(3), huge heat bank to take the heat from said wood burners, solar
panels on the roof also feeding the heat bank. 6kW wind turbine to
supply power and be able to sell a significant amount to the grid.
Fully rewired with backup gen set and Cat6 networking for a Gigibit
LAN and probably a bit of fibre to link the one end to the other. The
of course it would be all new kitchens and bathrooms (all quality
branded items), all new carpets and quite a lot of new furnishings.
Could happily make a big dent in a million quid I reckon.
Ah 'tis nice to dream on a bright sunny spring morning.
to stop the dampness getting in, for a start. Oh, and a new bathroom.

sealed from the elements.

Damp is more indirect but can go into the thousands, accumulated over the decades! If your shoes are rotting, that's a huge problem. If you have mould, it's a serious health hazard and you should be thinking of drying out! Do you have sufficient ventilation (moisture out) and is your pointing and roofwork (Moisture in)sound?
