I'd hate to see it go too. Workington has lost so much of it's character
That would indeed be bad. I'll sign the petition against that one!

by losing it's green areas, a little here, a little there. Were the
Cloffics taken, Pellucid?
I don't know what's holding them up at the Cloffocks, Edith. The last I
heard, Tesco had definitely acquired the site. (How were the Council able to
sell common land that rightfully belonged to the People of Workington,
rather than to the Council? If it's been sold surely the money they got for
it should be given back to the People!) Tesco had leaflets in their current
store showing illustrations of their proposed new Tesco Extra store which
they were planning to build in the Cloffocks. That was ages ago, and so far
as I can see, nothing's happening. Not having grown up in the area like you,
Edith, I don't have any emotional ties to the Cloffocks, but I do like a
nice big Tesco store, so I'm in two minds about it. In principle I'm against
big companies riding roughshod over the sensibilities of ordinary people,
and I'm against local Councils selling off land that's not rightfully theirs
in the first place. But . . . I do like a nice big Tesco . . .
Salterbeck became an asphalt jungle. I can't find my way through it any
more. I understand people need homes but the lay out seems impossible.
I guess they know what they are doing.
Don't you be so sure!!!
Edith-has also taken her shoes off and crossed the yearl with her
brothers.
Did you see the little house on the river in the bend just before going up
the hill to Seaton, Ally? If I remember, there were salmon in there.?
Maybe it was a fish farm. Anybody?.
I saw an angler land a big salmon as I walked along the riverside! It's the
first time I've ever seen someone actually land a big fish - quite dramatic,
it was. I was so fascinated by his technique that I forgot I had a camera
round my neck - why didn't I take a photo of it? Tch . . .
Here's the Mill Field from above, Edith: http://tinyurl.com/5qdcmv
It was fascinating looking down from t'top deck when t'bus passed on it's
way up to Seaton. There were various places I loved to pass on the bus. One
was the house I've just described, then there was the house in the middle
of the cross roads at Disington, The house where the lame, bed ridden boy
used to wave to the bus from his window upstairs, at Bridge Foot (?) My Mam
used to say, come on now, lets wave to him and we waved hoping it would
bring him a little joy for the day. Then there was, I believe it's called
Low Brigham Row, a hill where the bus passed on the way from Workington to
Cockermouth. The row always looked picturesque and neat and I always wanted
to get off the bus there and go into all the houses. It was nice. Probably
still is.
Yes - I know the place. It's still an attractive little row of houses.
Left hand side on the way up. The bus passes the rear of those buildings
now, so the people who used to come out onto their front doorstep to greet
the bus won't be able to anymore.
I bet they're extremely glad they don't have buses and heavy goods vehicles
trundling along that narrow twisty road at the front of their houses!
