I don't think we should be entertained by images of a subjugated race
who's
been abused for centuries. Your other examples are all cases of laughing
at
a bully. Blacks have never had any real power. It's just taking further
advantage of a people who have always been in a vulnerable position. One
our race put them in. If you want to make fun of of a war-mongering
aggressor race with ridiculous cultural behavious, fine. If you want to be
entertained by singing and dancing gang members, fine. If you want to
enjoy
the lighter side of a serial murdering f*ckhead (Eddie Izzard's name for
Hitler), fine.
I don't think people are entertained in the way you say. They are uplifted
by the spirit shown by the downtrodden and if we can't indulge in showing
empathy for basic humanity, where are we?
Such plays were never intended to offend and I don't think they take
advantage. I don't think too many people are really offended, it's just that
society is telling people to be oversensitive about a certain racial group
because their freedom was taken away. And yet in doing so society is
removing our freedoms.
Showboat may not be part of real history, but it is part of cultural
history. We don't object to Strauss. We don't object to the numerous
programs and films about gangsters. We don't object to endless stupid Asian
stereotypes, but show a singing blackman and the middle classes start
feeling uncomfortable. It's nuts. Where's the morality or consistancy?
Our state is full of double-standards. Race isn't meant to be an issue, to
highlight it is being racist, yet the census asks what race you are. To what
end?
I don't want to be entertained by gangsters, murderers, dancers or Eddie
Izzard. I can't stand them. I can't stand most musicals either, but there
are a few that are mildly entertaining with Showboat being one of them. If
other people can have sit back watching all manner of offensive material,
why can't those that want to watch a, historically inaccurate musical?
Because we think it may offend. There's a lot more offensive things out
there!
