I have just returned from a trip to the Worlds most beautiful city.
While I was in the Emerald City I took a wander through the museum.
I noticed in the area that covered minerals they had samples of
Hematite on show. I noticed the samples came from the Florence Mine
in Cumbria. I was surprised as we have so much Hematite in
Australia. I asked the bloke and he said that it was possibly the
highest quality Hematite in the world although difficult to mine.
Did't know that and had never heard of it.

There was a rather severe accident at the Florence Mine and 'Pallaflatt
House' at Bigrigg, the house I mis-spent my youth in, was used as the
Coroner's Office - a coupla years before my time though!

We had a gurt lump of haematite as a door stopper. Looked just like a huge
bubbly wad of chocolate. My ma has it still. Probably still propping a
door
open somewhere.

The row of cottages I live in is surrounded by houses built for the
workers
of the Roanhead Iron Ore Mines near Dalton and anyone who's ever been to
Dalton Zoo will have instantly recognised the red snow tiger, red white
rhino, red everything. My partner's youngest is now convinced that 'wild'
animals can be distinguished by their red colouring....

Next time I go pot-holing at Daylight I'll fetch a bag of the stuff. In
fact, I do recall that St. Thomas's Valley at the bottom of our street has
a
'barrow' in there called St. Helen's Mount, and I swear it's an iron-ore
slag bank. Probably littered with lumps of haematite under the brambles.

Bring me a la'al bit please, Kezzi, if you find any. Just a la'al bit, and
I'll shoot a squirrel for you. OO! Ouch! Stop throwing building bricks.

Edith.
