The Waverley couldn't be described as titillating, even though my memory is clouded by the years, and I think I'd give the organ concert a miss, actually. The Retreat looks a bit too posh and refined for the hoi polloi.

Not very impressed by their rather boring website, with its spelling mistakes - e.g., "dinning room...." We were taken there by friends for a meal about 6 years ago, and found the staff unhelpful and almost downright rude. I had recently stopped eating meat, and simply wanted a meat-free dish - fish would be fine, and this was before I got all complicated with gluten-free stuff - but d'you think they could manage it? The trout was about the only thing without meat, and they'd run out of trout, so that was that. Eventually they managed to dig out a piece of salmon for me, but they made me feel like I'd ruined their day and put them all to a great deal of trouble, leaving me embarrassed and uncomfortable as my friends' dishes were delayed too, and all because of my complicated and totally unnecessay desires for unusual food. I see from the website that they still offer only one meat-free dish on their rather limited menu, and nothing entirely vegetarian. They're just a bunch of snobs with no interest in making their customers feel welcome.
Hi there! :-) How is everybody today? :-) My name is Jp and I'm gonna be your server today. :-)) C'n I get you guys any drinks...?
Sounds like they need a visit from a large party of Americans ;-) Or better still, several small ones. Bwahahaha!
I have to confess that one thing I like about the States is the way that restaurants are not snobby. (There are few true snobs of the British variety here, but there are serious cliques and glass ceilings.) The servers (often students or moonlighters) work hard for their tips, and are usually willing to make sure that you are given every opportunity to add to your order. They expect to get a 15 % tip on this, which they distribute with their supporting bus boy and the kitchen crew. So they know what's on the menu, or what's off it and what the specials of the day are. Of course, there are always exceptions, and some servers are a bit useless, but they are notably few. Customers expect to be able to tailor their orders and they can and will return things if they aren't quite what they expected. They will not tip bad service or rudeness. My family is still a bit reticent about doing this, but I have cottoned on quite quickly.
I do have to confess, though, that being a gluten sensitive vegetarian here can't be much fun, either!
Thankyou very much. You take care now and have a nice day.
The decor was dull and boring too.
Not garish and titillating, then.
A quick look online at West Cumbria Camra's website, I see that the nearest pub they list offering accommodation seems to be the Dovenby Ship or the Golf Hotel or Criffel Inn at Silloth. That sounds about right. The Ship has been extended from a small local pub into a huge pensioners' canteen, but at least they sell Jennings and the food, though not particularly exciting, is perfectly edible. I suspect the Silloth places are better, as they get more customers from farther afield, but for some reason I've never had a meal in Silloth (apart from the odd fish supper, anyway) so I can't comment from personal experience.

A Pensioner's canteen, eh? Oh well.
