And how come I'm not at all tall, though my childhood was extremely well-fed? (Admittedly my parents weren't particularly tall either, but both of them were fed well enough in childhood too.)

The district nurse can work it all out before you're two years old. But mostly, the matter of being under 5'8" has to do with being a girl.
