Let's hope Marra is just interested in Maryport's improvements and not just trying to escape the gill nets which kill so many of these interesting mammals.
Apparently Pliny wrote of a dolphin arriving in an ancient harbour where it swam with the children. The people for miles around heard about this and arrived in the town in large numbers to see the fun. There was a law of hospitality which said the visitors had to be put up and fed by the townspeople. So eventually the town council arranged to kill the dolphin.

There are huge schools of porpoises which swam from the top of Scotland down the coast in the North Sea. I used to frequent a restaurant to the south of Aberdeen, where one could observe the schools of porpoises breaking the waves on their way south. Wonderful creatures.
