Snow at Birdoswald - well, a little

My son and I went this afternoon to Birdoswald to have a look at Hadrian's
Wall, as his train back to Scotland didn't leave Carlisle until a bit later.
The moment we got out of the car the snow started to blow into our faces.
First I've seen this winter. We wandered around the Roman fort feeling
somewhat frozen, wondering what it must have felt like for those poor Roman
soldiers, fresh from the warm Mediterranean, finding themselves stranded in
this godforsaken outpost with not an olive tree in sight. How the Picts must
have laughed at them, stomping around the frozen ground wearing socks with
their sandals and blowing on their fingernails.
