Many many years ago, I opted for option (b) or maybe (c)*. This is why my
house is crumbling with damp and I can't afford holidays (apart from those
that involve cheapy airlines and friends in Norway who'll lend me a bed).
But I believe I am significantly happier than I would have been if I'd
accepted the civil service job they offered me, and worked my way up the
promotion ladder whose highest rungs I'd have surely reached by now, with a
salary to match.

Option (c): Give up the 9-5 job completely and work for yourself in your own
time and at your own pace in a part of the country that's beautiful but has
a shortage of customers who are rich enough to pay the sort of bills you'd
like to throw at them.
