Re: Frightened to live in Cornwall?

A very pertinent issue IMO.

I am English, brought up in rural Scotland in the 60's and 70's and experienced serious ongoing racism. I am white and indistinguishable from most Scots except for my accent. That was enough.

School was a nightmare - daily life was often difficult. I wont go into details, except to say that it included being stabbed as a child, thankfully not too badly.

I left Scotland as soon as I was old enough and wild horses could not drag me back there. I can only hope that things have improved there now.

Interestingly I have two Scottish friends who live here, and I have often noticed that they don't seem to encounter anything like the same.

The only good things to come out of my experiences is a dislike of racists in general, and a high degree of self-reliance.

My experience of Cornwall is completely different - I have never ever felt unwelcome or unsafe here.
I have encountered a few Cornish nationalists, and occasionally have endure an anti-English rant, usually well lubricated after a couple of Doombars. Buts that's about it.

Feel free to contact me if you are interested.

Adam.

Dear All,

I am a journalist writing a feature for the Sunday Times magazine in London, looking at the new separatism at work in Britain -- starting with Cornwall (after the CNLA threats to Jamie Oliver and Rick Stein), and working up to Wales and Scotland. Have any English users of this forum felt any prejudice? Have you felt frightened to be English in Cornwall? Or is the banter all good-natured?
