Hi,
Am currently doing a survey regarding the rail line between Temple
Meads and Avonmouth, and I'd be greatful if people on this group who
live within a reasonable walk of the line would give their views.
It's being asked why such few people are using the line, and I've drawn
up a few options as to why I think people are taking the bus or driving
rather than using it.
1. Trains take too long
2. Service too infrequent
3. Difficult to reach centre from Temple Meads
4. No Sunday service
5. Stations dirty/feel unsafe
6. Concessionary pass not valid for free travel
7. Didnt know service existed
8. Trains/stations too hot/cold
9. Car is cheaper
If anyone reading the group could respond with why they don't use the
line when going to town, I'd be greatful - also any more options are
welcome :P
I'm based in Shirehampton, working nearest to either Redland or
Clifton Down, I've not decided which yet - I think CD is nearest but
Redlands a nicer walk :-)
I would love to be able to use the line for my regular route to work.
Unfortuantely, it just doesn't run at suitable times for me.
I start work at 9:30/10am (depending on the day) - If I'm to get the train
from shire, I'd get to redland at 8:50am (far too early) or 10:15 (too
late)
I don't have the return journey timetable on me, but from what I
remember it was similarly inconvenient. I'd either have to leave work
20 minutes early (not possible) or hang around on the station for 40
minutes.
I guess that makes me a 2.
My other half uses the service to do the last leg of the journey from
london on a weekend - and that's great on a friday! The lack of sunday
service is a bit of a pain, but we only miss it every other weekend, so
it's not really a priority.
Currently I'm cycling in - but I can see that becoming less practical
once winter takes hold (it's blowy enough cycling along the A4 in this
weather, I imagine it'll be horrible in the cold rain of winter) And I'm
*very* keen on using the train as an alternative.
It's just a shame that doing so will mean I have to arrange new working
hours.
I am eyeing up the possibility of using the portway Park and Ride,
although at £3 a day - that's going to get expensive quickly. Although
even that is likely to cost less and provide a better service than any
of the firstbus alternatives.
