Didn't they sell blank CDs for audio CD recorders at a higher price? I
know they have to have special blank CDs, not the ones used by
computers that everyone else uses:

News report today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13429217

There is no such thing as a special audio CD blank, the various CD
standards
relate to the parameters of the data structure not the physical disc.

Well Maplin seem to think they exist, as they sell them in the link I
have given (at somewhat more than the CD-R discs sold for computer
burners).

That's what is commonly referred to as a complete rip-off. They are nothing
more than 80 min cd-r, some brands have a reputation as being higher quality
discs and are generally more compatible - not because of the brand itself
though - because the manufacturing process is done using one of several
different coloured dyes used at different plants. It is the dye used that
dictates the compatibility and reputation not the third party rebranding and
labelling.

Taiyo Yuden were generally accepted as the superior cd-r for many years, I
don't know if this is still the case.

this link is old but highlights what I've tried to described above
