You want to fix yob behaviour? Reintroduce National Service.
Simplez. Will it happen? No, of course it won't! We don't have
the money, and we only think short-term, anyway.

By the time they old enough to do NS they're past the age (mostly)
of trashing playgrounds etc. Most kids have nowhere to go. If our
politicians were to spend some money on facilities for them there
would be less vandalism, however young teenagers don't have the
vote so that's not going to happen.
This is just bulls**t. When I was a cop I got sick to death of
whining parents trying to excuse the criminal behaviour of their
brats by suggesting that they had nothing to do.

Kids of today have more money, and more to do with it, than any
past generation - and yet they are the worst behaved of any past
generation. Most areas have playing fields, swimming pools, sports
centres, and
cinemas. Most kids today have their own games consoles, computers,
MP3 players, mobile phones, and TVs.

To suggest that they have nothing to do is utter utter nonsense.

But, essentially, 'doing' is mostly only 'using' various facilities
which are provided. These days, kids don't really 'do' much which is
'constructive'.

When I were a lad, we didn't have many facilities, and used to 'do'
a lot more. Any vandalism was usually fairly accidental and
relatively minor, and without malice.
Indeed. What happened to putting up rope swings over rivers. Building
oil-drum rafts to sail on ponds. Going for long cycle rides with a
packed lunch. Just wandering across the countryside and climbing
trees? !!
'Scrumping' was also very popular in my youth. It included climbing
trees. :-)
For those unfamiliar with the term, it meant stealing fruit from
orchards. Apples, pears, plums, cherries. In season we sampled them
all. . And our little group of 3-4, 12-14 year olds were quite well
organised. Look-outs on the ground whilst the rest were up the trees.
Shamefull I know, but stealing a bit of fruit at our age didm't strike
us as being a serious crime. I doubt we made much difference to total
crop yield. Mike.
LOL! Yes, this is one retired police officer who will admit to a
previous life of crime in respect to scrumping...

I forgot to mention that I was also involved in activities which, these
days, would get me hauled off and charged with training to be a
terrorist - making bows and arrows, gunpowder, bombs, fireworks and
other explosives, making secret camps, boiling acid, slaughtering the
wildlife with airguns, carrying knives (always), collecting birds' eggs
- and that was when we were on our best behaviour!

Yep, we did that too, all apart from the wildlife bit as there wasn't much around our little area. We made some cracking explosives with old fireworks and my mum's kitchen ceiling bore the scars of chemistry kit experiments for many years. All my friends carried some sort of knife or other - usually a swiss army knife or copy of one. None of us ever stabbed each other.

I always had a sheath knife strapped to me(when a lad). It was used mainly for whittling or digging up worms for fishing etc. The thought of using it as a weapon was never even considered.
