Indeed, although it may not be a total defence to say "I had to slam
on because I realised was going too fast for the conditions".

It sounds more a question of "I had to slow down because otherwise my
speed *would have been* too fast for the conditions that pertained up
ahead."

Provided it was a gradual slowing. Obviously if the driver in front
was going like the clappers in the first place, and then slammed on
causing someone behind to slide into them, then there is an argument
that the driver in front is at least partly to blame.

Thanks Ste,

Well, if it helps, the car in front was being GPS track logged, which
showed
it only going around 20mph, and slowing down.

If it also helps, the photos also show a clear road, which then changes
into
ice.

If there was a sudden transition to ice, and the driver in front
stopped short of it, then I fail to understand how the car behind
managed to slide into the back of the car in front (unless, of course,
the driver behind was simply not paying attention).

very true and purely the point.

alot of people have asked if we called police to the seen, we didnt, does
that matter much?
can we still report the incident to police now?

Thanks
