I want to see less wastage of energy. If this means using a computer
instead of a car to do a job then so be it. If this means not leaving
the lights on then so be it. The net result would be a reduction in
energy consumption and therefore less need for more and more polluting
power stations.

We have already seen a move towards economical electrical appliances
and that is the way to go.


Yes, we've already seen these 'economical' appliances where the whole thing
just hasn't been though through.

Washing machines that don't clean clothes because they use a tea cupful of
water.

Washing machines that no longer fill with hot water, because cold fill only
makes the energy efficiency look better (even though its actually worse once
the efficiency of the external hot water supply is taken into account and
the efficiency of generating and distributing the electricity to heat the
cold water).

Ovens that under cook food because they use less energy and take nearly a
hour to warm up (and once warmed up, the energy consumption is a function of
the insulation not of the heater power anyway).

"Low energy" light bulbs that pollute land fill sites with mercury (and are
actually less efficient overall than the most efficient filament
technology).

The list goes on and on.
