But one wonders what makes Ryanair want to impose such draconian conditions as to have nothing less than a full, current passport (or a non-existent government ID card). Are they under pressure from 'the authorities' (as an anti-terrorist measure)? Or is it simply a safeguard for their own benefit (presumably to prevent you from swapping non-refundable tickets)?
According to the American cyber-security expert Bruce Schneier, this turned out to be exactly the reason the US budget airlines adopted compulsory photo-ID. I can look up the reference if anyone is interested.
