joyrides for families is a better use of (very limited)resources than

The RAF doesn't send ALL it's resources into theatre. That would be
lunacy.
They keep a certain amount back here in the UK for training purposes,
operations within the country, R&D, routine maintenance, rotation of
assets and contingency readiness.
I agree that the shortage of helo's in theatre is a bloody disgrace, but
honestly, this is a story about nothing. It's shoddy journalism at best.
If we have to keep a few chinook's back here in the UK, we might as well
put them to some use while they're here.
I see no problem with assigning one of the chinooks for an afternoon to
give kiddies at an in-house RAF air show a pleasure trip.
It's a good PR exercise, using something that would otherwise be gathering
dust in a hangar.
