However, you seem to be suggesting that when I identify a message as
private, I should manually move the messages into a protected folder. This
wouldn't solve the problem, though. While I'm away, these private and
sensitive emails would be arriving and they could be read by the computer
user if they aren't password protected in some way.
I'm not entirely certain what you are looking for.

You want to allow someone to monitor your incoming emails, but not be
able to read any that are "personal". But how is *any* program going
to be able to determine which emails are personal, and which are not?

It would be possible to write a small proggie that logs onto your
email server and collects just the email headers, so only the sender
and subject line can be seen, if that would be of any help.

Will you not be in a position to collect your emails from a laptop
whilst you are away? You can get relatively cheap Internet access via
a USB dongle that works via the cellphone system if you are going to
be in the UK.

What I had in mind was to be able to tell my close friends to password protect their emails if I didn't want my colleague/secretary to read any personal stuff. So whatever it was, it would have to be installed not only on my computer but on the sender's computer.

If those close friends had Word, you could ask them to write the messages in Word and password protect that. The resulting Word document could then be sent as an attachment and not be read by anybody without the password.
