Our Toshiba ER - 7620 has performed faultlessly (except a bulb failure)
since we bought it in the mid 1980s, however I suppose despite governments
crying on about conservation, wasted energy and pollution they seem to
welcome (and dare I say it, actively encourage) the kind of mass consumerism
which generates jobs and taxes that the stuff winding up as 'unserviceable'
junk in landfills after four or five years creates.



The problem is that you must pay for durability - I'll bet you paid a
fair crack for your microwave back in the mid 80s.


Yes but it does have a very nice stainless steel oven compartment, something which wasn't quite as commonplace as it is nowadays back then.

Also, I'll bet it now looks as dated as your grandfather's
transistor radio.


Looks dated, yes I'd forgotten about that, another sound ecological reason for relegating it to the nearest landfill.. Although something I will concede I've done myself in the past.
