A 14-year-old entrant on the Miss Teen Queen UK website
'Gratuitous': A 14-year-old girl poses on beauty contest website Teen
Queen UK, which has been labelled a 'shop window for sex offenders'
A beauty pageant has been labelled a 'shop window for sex offenders' by
a leading children's charity after it published the breast sizes of
girl entrants as young as 13.
Online contest Miss Teen Queen UK was blasted by Kidscape after it
featured a string of girls under the age of 16 with details of their
cup measurements as well as hip and waist sizes.
All the girls are named in full and their hometown is listed on the
website - leading to fears that predators could access the electoral
roll and track them down.
The website, open to girls aged 13 to 19 across the country, was
branded 'inappropriate' and 'gratuitous' after displaying images of
some schoolgirls posing provocatively.
In total the site shows photos of 51 finalists, with 24 of the girls
pictured under the age of 16. Four of them are the minimum age required
- just 13 years old.
Kidscape director Claude Knights today said the site needs to conduct
an 'urgent review' of how it treats young models and the offending
breast measurements should be removed immediately.
She said: 'This is inappropriate and gratuitous information and should
not be used to exploit young girls - this information should be removed.
'We are disturbed and concerned by how a website marketing itself as a
teen beauty contest can deem it suitable to use intimate measurements
of schoolgirls to judge them in a competition.
'It is very difficult for girls of 13 to be fully aware of the
consequences of exposure like this.
'We do a great deal of work in relation to asking young people to think
carefully before they put up profiles of themselves online, especially
provocative details.
'This kind of thing only undermines that and serves as a portal to
justify the sexualisation of children.'
She said that Kidscape was also worried that children could register
online without parental consent.
'There is worrying potential that they can be easily exploited and in
some cases actually be pursued online by predators.'
A 15-year-old's online profile on Teen Queen UK
'Inappropriate': This 15-year-old entrant wants to fulfil her 'lifelong
dream of becoming a top model'. Her bust size is listed alongside her
other measurements
The website - which features an 'Enter yourself now!' button going
through to a registration page - specifies that under-18 girls 'must
have' parental consent before they post their profiles.
The 'qualifications for eligibility' section adds that the girls 'must
not have been married or had a child' or have a 'criminal record'.
Prizes for girls who progress through a series of heats to the final
include 'free clothing, cosmetics and international travel'.
An 'advice for models' page also urges aspiring young girls to make
sure they keep a strict 'diet and fitness' regime - exercising three
times a week to maintain a healthy body and advising that 'toned and
lean' bodies 'look better on camera'.
The site promises each month that 100 successful entrants will be
photographed before being put up for a 'public vote' by a hotline and
text bank with heats culminating in this year's final on August 13.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection - the UK's largest law
enforcement agency for tackling child sexual abuse - cautioned parents
about allowing their children to post personal and sensitive data about
themselves online.
Teen Queen UK front page
Teen Queen UK describes itself as 'the UK's first teen beauty pageant'.
The site has been criticised for 'serving as a portal to justify the
sexualisation of children'
A spokesman said: 'Although we can't comment on individual cases we
would caution against the use of bra sizes for young children.
'Clearly there is a concern that where a young person goes on the
internet a paedophile or sex offender will follow.
'Someone with a sexually deviant interest in children will naturally be
attracted to a site which provides images or information they are
after.'
Mother Gillian Taylor, from Gillingham in Kent, said the thought of her
13-year-old daughter's chest size on a website 'fills her with disgust'.
She said: 'It's wrong. Girls my daughter's age should not have to be
asked about their breast sizes. It fills me with disgust that websites
like this are allowed to exist unchecked.'
She added: 'All it takes is for some pervert to look up the girl's
surname on the electoral roll and hey presto he's found her. God only
knows what could happen after that.'
Miss Teen Queen UK defended its decision to publish the vital
statistics of girls as young as 13 saying that they only do so with the
'full consent' of parents.
Lina Perrini, director of the competition, said the measurements only
apply to finalists and parents are sent consent forms and
questionnaires to make sure they are happy before the profiles go
online.
She said: 'This is something that comes up every year but if parents
are uncomfortable they don't have to put it on there - it is completely
at their discretion.
'We don't put every single girls' statistics online and we send out
full parent consent forms and questionnaires to make sure they are
happy.
'Only the finalists have these details published - we are very, very
careful. We are dealing with teenagers.
'The winner goes on to represent the UK at the Miss Global Beauty Queen
Contest.'
She added that no girls under 18 who are invited to their studios
attends without a parent or guardian.
