"What is far more common is the way in which the law is bent for
outwardly benign purposes. Many police forces now set up "knife
arches" as part of their drive against knife crime. They have no
legal power to compel an individual to walk through them, yet the
Met has indicated that refusal to walk through an arch when
asked to do so by an officer "may" be grounds for a search. In
other words, the police have no explicit power to compel an
individual to walk through an arch -- if parliament had wished
to grant that power, it probably would have -- but creative
interpretation of the law has given it to them all the same."

A classic police 'abuse of power' tactic IME.

So you do not welcome pro-active initiatives to tackle knife
crime? Can you come up with an alternative method of determining
if people are carrying illegal knives?

People have been carrying illegal knives since the Glasgow razor
gangs. It's old hat.

People have been raping children since cavemen times, probably. Is
that old hat? Does something being "Old Hat" make it acceptable? My
son is in primary school. I don't want him to be a knife crime
statistic. I do not find it acceptable and I do not accept someone
who cares so little for others safety.

You are just emoting. The problem is a disappearingly small one, but
blown up out of all proportion in order to justify the heavy-handed
policing tactics that are now becoming commonplace in Britain.

For goodness sake - an average of five people a week are losing their lives
to knives - and you still think that is a 'disappearingly small' occurrence?

I

expect you think if you travel on the Tube you may get blown up at any
time, yes? And what if you travelled on the Paris Metro? The New York
Subway? HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THOSE TERRIBLY DANGEROUS SYSTEMS? Maybe
you should. Now, to be safe, please remove all sharp objects from your
house, just in case someone has an accident.

The New York subway is now very safe - as is most of New York city. Why?
Because of zero tolerance policing introduced by Rudi Giuliani. Flood the
city with officers and clamp down on every minor crime and the result is a
much safer city to live in.  Last time I was in New York you could hardly
turn a corner without seeing a cop. Somehow, however, I don't believe that
you would welcome such a zero tolerance initiative over here................

Ret.

No, that is what Rudi Giuliani and his friends claim. I suggest you
read more widely.

You are correct, the last thing I want is anywhere in the UK to become
like New York, in any way.
