I am rather taken aback by the authoritarianism, thinly disguised
xenophobia and schadenfreude expressed in some replies. But I am
grateful for the other helpful responses. At any rate, I don't see your
reason for upholding a law just because it is a law: cessante ratione
legis cessat ipsa lex. How's that for a defense?


No defence at all in the circumstances. I don't think anyone in this thread
has defended the law, but they have tried to tell you how things are in this
country. Nothing to do with xenophobia just explaining that each country has
its own way of doing things. You will minimise any penalty by pleading
guilty, showing remorse and being polite to the magistrates.
