Today, I visited PC World's High Street Kensington store with my
elderly mum. She isn't very tech savvy and wanted to replace a memory
card on her Sony digital camera with a bigger one. The digital camera
uses an unusually shaped memory card which the store assistant
couldn't find on the shelf.

I don't mean to be unkind, but you were knowledgeable enough to find
this usergroup, which implies you could have done a Google search for
the online version of the manufacturer's manual for your camera. The
technical specs in that should tell you what memory cards are suitable
for it, before looking online for a suitable item at a price you wish
to pay. You can then decide if you actually want to make the journey
to PC World rather than waiting for next-day's post from an online
supplier.
