Most credit cards charge about 1.5% for non-sterling transactions,
Post office and Nationwide are the only ones I know that don't. Some
list it as a separarte charge, others hide it in the exchange rate.

Nationwide are introducing charges on their credit and debit cards for
non-euro foreign currency transactions. I can't recall whether they are
also planning on charging for EU non-euro transactions.

That's a bit naughty as the central plank of their advertising has been that
they *don't* charge for using debit or credit cards abroad.

It has been a major plank in the past yes.

Not any more :(

In view of the high profile advertising, I would regard that as an explicit
term of any contract and any attempt to change it as an unlawful unilateral
variation to that contract.

But you would of course be wrong on the latter part of that.

Yes, it has indeed been an explicit term of all their contracts, but
like all terms in contracts of indeterminate length, it can perfectly
lawfully be changed, so long as they give the consumer reasonable
notice, and the chance to exit the contract at no charge.
